The Past is a Foreign Country

“The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there…”

In the summer of 2022, I was awarded a creative residency at The TX Studio in Dallas, Texas. The portraits taken during this residency were inspired by the word Anemoia, defined as “nostalgia for a time you’ve never known” in The Dictionary of Obscure Shadows by John Koenig, a dictionary of made-up words for emotions that we all feel but don't have the words to express. The Past is a Foreign Country utilizes vintage wardrobe pieces and period-inspired hair and makeup to create images evoking eight decades ranging from the 1920s through the 1990s.
